Baxter has used the HugaDog harness and they are good for smooths, but they don't work for long haired or wires because the velcro gets caught in the fur and pulls.

Bette and Baxter

new dachshunds - doxies in the family:: Introducing new puppy
I will be in your same situation in a few weeks when I bring home a new female doxie puppy to a house where my 5-year-old male has been the only dog.

First, never leave them alone together unattended.

That is paramount in keeping the puppy safe as you won't know for quite a while how they will get along.
They probably will end up being best buddies, but you have to make sure the puppy is safe while she is still vunerable.

My breeder recommended using an X-pen to contain the puppy with her crate and food and water bowls and put down newspaper (for potty) to keep her contained and safe, especially when you can't watch her.

This will give you and your other dog a break from her when needed and it will keep your puppy safe from getting into things that could harm her.

I have been told that having them meet on neutral ground is good too, so maybe you can use a neighbors yard that you know is safe to put your puppy down on the ground.

I would not put her down on any ground that stray dogs could have been as you don't know what has been there and your puppy won't have been vaccinated.

If you don't trust your neighbor's yard, than have them meet in your backyard, but keep a close eye on them at all times and be ready to get your puppy if necessary.

I have been told to make sure they each have their own separate food bowls and also to feed, give attention to and give treats to your older dog first so he does not get jealous of the puppy.

After a while they will work out their own order of dominance, but not until the puppy is older.

I also recommend getting some of the good resource books out there or googling on the internet for tips on how to introduce a second dog to the family.

Good luck!
Bette and Baxter

welcome new dachshunds and doxies!:: Hello!
Sammy is so cute! I love the middle picture, he just looks so relieved you decided to take him home. Well done for being willing to take on a dog that the kennel deemed unsuitable, you are sure to have to most special bond.

dachshund - doxie information, questions and answers:: Eye question
All these crazy eye pictures are adorable! Axel had very similar eyes when he was a pup, almost too big for his head and going in odd directions. He has perfect eyes now, so I don't think there is much to worry about.

wow, that is a pretty intense ramp you have there! I think training would be the most difficult thing to do but I definitely think that is the best solution...I like the idea of using treats!
