Re: What's your Doxie's fave toy?

The only one who actually plays with toys is Beemer. His is obsessed with CUZ balls. He carries it around to whatever he goes. That is, when he isn't demanding that we throw it for him. If he has to go outside, he grabs the ball and jumps out the doggie door. Sometimes he even sleeps with it in his mouth. He will hold it in his mouth as his goes potty, and then carries it back in. When it is time for dinner, he runs into the kitchen, spits the ball out, and eats his dinner. When it time for bed, he grabs the ball and takes it upstairs. I have to insure him that it will be safe on the side table all night, then he settles down. In the morning he leaps up and sits up in front of the night stand so I can give him his ball. Then, the day starts again..... *sigh*

Oh that is heartbreaking! Can you trace the timing to anything? About a year ago would have been when your daughter turned 1? What developmental stage was she in...what did she learn at 1? to walk? did Lindsey witness anything like your daughter hurt herself in a toddlers fall or get choked on a toy or ANYTHING? Its a total guess, but I would wonder (I have a young daughter too.) if Lindsey internalized anything that she may have witnessed with the babygirl that she associates as her sibling? Hang in there...I know it must be hard on your family to have a member so distressed.

Re: What the heck is Butter looking for?

Wow! She WAS pregnant when she was dumped at the shelter, and when she arrived at our house. It took me about 2 hours of watching her to see that she was pregnant. Early stages, but pregnant. She was already "nesting." Nipples swollen. Lady parts, err, in the "pregnant" state.

Since she was 3 years old, unfixed, and dumped at a shelter pregnant, I suspect this may not have been her first litter. Whether she was a breeding bitch or just had a habit of getting pregnant, we'll never know.

Sadly, we decided both together and with the rescue that the pregnancy should be terminated. We had NO idea what the father was and whether this birth would be dangerous for her, none of us wanted to force her to continue to breed (in case she had been bred a lot) and mixed puppies are much more difficult to place through a breed-specific rescue. Additionally, the shelter didn't bother to check (big city shelter) on whether she was pregnant before giving certain vaccinations--the sort that do sometimes kill the puppies. I noticed immediately just by seeing her lady parts when she walked in front of me, but they didn't.

She was with us for 2 days before her spay, and she was "nesting" the entire time. I would not mind fostering the puppies and dealing with it until they could be adopted, but I completely agree that it was better she not have them.

However you may be on to something!

One additional behavior that I don't think has to do with pregnancy but may indicate her past. We have a vice grip attached to our kitchen table (not one you eat at, one you work at). If I need to do something very quickly before taking a dog out, I just slip the leash into the grip and they wait there. Butter was as calm as still pond one day, until I set the leash in the thing (plenty of lead on it) to tie my shoes. She had a COW. Threw herself to the ground and writhed around on the floor and managed to get herself out of her harness before I could pull the leash out of the grip. She does beautifully walking on a leash, but the fact that I was not holding the leash at the time made her crazy.

Re: What the heck is Butter looking for?

Our oldest girl had several false pregnancies after being spayed as a puppy. She has some psycological(sp?)problems from it. She is absolutely obsessed with babies. We have given her stuffed animals from the beginning to help, which she carries around obsessively and is constantly hiding between cushions etc and then digging back out to carry around more. We even got another puppy(Lilly)for her, because it was so heartbreaking to watch. However, after getting used to stuffed babies, she DID NOT care for this new puppy with sharp teeth, lol.

Maybe your girl has had a similar problem and is exibiting weird maternal instincts. When you both are in the room, you are accounted for and she is looking to make sure she doesn't have any other "babies" she is missing??? When my mama dogs have puppies, it isn't uncommon for them to do this. They don't seem to have any understanding of how many there should be(and we have small litters of 2,3 or 4 puppies)and when they are all gathered together they will go looking around to make sure none have wandered off and are missing.

Why is it that when my Mama or Papa scratches me in just the right spot on my neck, my back leg goes kickie-kickie? I can't control it. If they start scratching when I am standing on the wood floor or sidewalk, I have to balace on three legs and go kickie-kickie with the forth leg because God knows I can't put my precious rear end on anything but carpet. I know you understand.

Does every doxie have a kickie-kickie spot? Why does my leg go kickie-kickie at all?

Thanks for your help on this matter.

Your Dapple Doxie Friend,
Two
